Bud probably found his original inspiration in Frankie Trumbauer's tone on C melody sax and although his phrasing leaned towards Hawkins, the sound was lighter more in the direction of Lester.
Bud was a frequent UK visitor to the UK and when in the north east usually stayed with the late Randy Heads. Bud was very much an Anglophile, Randy once telling me that Bud was more British than he was.
I remember Bud playing at Newcastle City Hall with the World's Greatest Jazz Band.
My buddy, the late Jim McDowell and I popped into a nearby pub (Tilleys/City Tavern?) and ordered a couple of pints which one of us duly paid for. I can't recall if this was post concert or during the interval but whatever, a few minutes later 'in walked Bud' with bassist Bob Haggart. They too ordered a couple of drinks and, upon receipt, the person behind the bar said to Bud 'that'll be x pounds'. Bud shook his head and said, 'we pay separately'. The British tradition of drinking in rounds had yet to reach him. I mentioned this to Randy who said that Bud was a tight man with a buck!
Still, it didn't stop him playing well at the concert or indeed on this 1938 recording. Lance
