Bebop Spoken There

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Album review: Avishai Cohen - Brightlight (naïve/believe)

(Collective): Avishai Cohen (bass, vocals); Guy Moskovich, Eden Giat (piano); Roni Kaspi, Noam David (drums); Yuval Drabkin (sax); Yosi Ben Tovim (guitar); Lars Nilsson (trumpet); Hilel Salem (flugel); Jakob Sollerman (trombone); Ilan Salem (flutes); Jenny Nilsson (vocals)

I have to be honest and say that this album didn't do a lot for me, at least not at first. By the same token I didn't dislike it. There were good moments that, as the album unfurled I was beginning to think that maybe I was a bit hasty in passing judgement. Cohen's bass playing, his compositions and arrangements are faultless and his vocal on Summertime is one of the better versions of that overworked song.

I'm guessing that it's Moskovich who's featured on Liszt's Liebestraum n° 3 and it is quite a beautiful rendition. He also has a fine solo on Summertime. In fact I think both pianists could have been playing on this track. Then again, that's what some folks thought when they first heard Tatum!

Drabkin does some nice things on Polka Dots and Moonbeams, he even sneaks in a few bars of the good old High Society clarinet solo. I'm not sure if he's playing alto or super cool tenor. Roni Kaspi has been touring with Cohen for three years as part of his trio (Moskovich is the third member) and the bassist composed Roni's Swing as a feature for her.

The more I listen, the more my misgivings float away! It is actually well worth checking out. Release date is Oct. 25 and they (presumably the trio) play Ronnie's next March (dates tba). Lance

Courage; Brightlight; Hope; The Ever and Ever Evolving Etude; Humility;  Drabkin; Roni's Swing; Hitragut; Liebestraum n° 3; Summertime; Polka Dots and Moonbeams.
