The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

NONUNONU @ Elder Beer, Newcastle - April 18

Tim Williams (guitar); Andy Patterson (bass); Ruben Sheridan (drums); Callum Connell (tenor sax)

Guitarist Tim Williams first came to the attention of BSH as a member of Dean Stockdale's superb 'Celebrating Oscar' Quartet. On the first occasion at Newcastle's Lit Phil, and later at Hampstead Jazz Club, Williams proved to be a revelation. This evening in the east of Newcastle, we were listening to Williams in an entirely different context. NONUNONU, that's Williams' trio - Andy Patterson (bass) and Ruben Sheridan (drums) - with the addition of tenor saxophonist Callum Connell, is on tour.

Groove based jazz loaf fresh out of the oven. That's one of NONUNONU's social media tags. The groove is coming right out of the vibrant Manchester jazz scene and the boys brought a slice, if not a whole loaf, of it to Elder Beer Cafe on Chillingham Road. The gig space is the cafe's back yard. On a chilly Chillingham Road evening overhead heaters were pressed into action. Looking around, familiar jazz heads were conspicuous by their absence. Looking at it from a different angle, who were these guys sitting in a backyard listening to the Manchester groove? Opening with Clones, the core trio seated, saxophonist Connell standing to one side, NONUNONU hit a groove.

Over the course of two sets the quartet variously chilled then tore it up. Williams' Bim's Bounce (the new single) put the handbrake on, followed by a Headhunters' vibe, of which Mr H. Hancock would have approved and grooved. Wayne Shorter's Speak No Evil represented the modern standards' songbook, the quartet never less than excellent, superb musicianship all night long and, into the bargain, in a non-stop groove.
