The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Art Themen - Sold Out! - However...

If you've left it too late to get a ticket for Sunday night's JNE gig at the Globe by the great Art Themen do not despair.

It isn't the only game in town. Over on the east side of the city at Cluny 2 the Jazz Defenders are in concert.

This hard-driving band from over the border made a big impression on me when they played at Hoochie a couple of years ago. It was one of my gigs of the year in 2022 as you will gather from this review - LINK.

So you can get your Sunday night jazz fix even earlier as it's a 6:00pm start and that isn't all. If you've got a 'souped-up' 2-litre jazzmobile you could hear the Jamie Toms Quartet in Hexham at 3:00pm, Lindsay Hannon at 5:00pm in Durham, the Jazz Defenders at 6:00pm then spin a coin between Edgar Rubenis at the Pro. Bar or the Tweed River Jazzmen in Berwick at 7:00pm.

All doable but, and here's the rub, a combination of roadworks and parking problems could lead to the best laid schemes of mice and men ... Lance

Hi Lance,

You're right to say that the Jazz Defenders are a fine band, but I'm not which map you're looking at when you describe them as coming from "over the border". They are in fact based in Bristol, with several of the members being long-standing leading figures on the city's jazz scene.

I stand corrected. It was their association with the record label Haggis Records that caused me to make this erroneous assumption.
