Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Press release: Lantern Jazz on the Terrace - The Abbie Finn Trio @ Newcastle Cathedral (formerly St. Nicholas). July 30 (2:00 pm - 3:00 pm)

Indulge in the relaxing sounds of jazz on the Eastern Terrace of Newcastle Cathedral on two delightful Sunday afternoons this summer.

The Abbie Finn Trio perform regularly around the North East and further afield. They have featured at Jazz in the Round at the Cockpit in London, Newcastle Jazz Festival, Manchester Jazz Festival, Hexham Jazz Festival, Jazz at the Lescar, Durham Jazz Festival, Band on the Wall, Middlesbrough Jazz Weekender and more. In the trio, drummer Abbie works with fellow Leeds College of Music alumnus, saxophonist Harry Keeble, and bass player Paul Grainger.

‘Abbie provides the percussion for some genuinely excellent music. The album is one that jazz aficionados ought to love. The quality is consistent throughout.’ – Jonathan Coll, NARC Magazine Review; ‘Exceptional British Jazz from drummer Abbie Finn.’ – Chris Philips, Jazz FM. Find out more about the Abbie Finn Trio.

This event will take place on the Eastern Terrace, overlooked by the Cathedral’s iconic Lantern Tower. Refreshments will be available on the day, with all proceeds going to the Friends of St Nicholas, whose mission is to maintain and beautify the heritage of this sacred place.

Click here to book tickets via TicketSource.

While you do not need to book in advance, you will need to pre-book your place to make sure you have a seat reserved on the Terrace (these are otherwise subject to availability). If the weather isn’t on our side, this event will move indoors to the Cathedral Refectory.
