Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

The Music of Astrud Gilberto @ Central Bar, Gateshead - July 2

Pete Tanton (trumpet, flugelhorn, vocals); Alan Law (piano); Paul Grainger (double bass)

This afternoon's session was more a 'tribute to' rather than a play-through album set. And the tribute was to the great Astrud Gilberto who died recently. The bossa nova craze and its enduring legacy was largely down to Astrud Gilberto's timeless number Girl from Ipanema and it proved fitting that today's trio led by Pete Tanton should open with the now legendary song.

As hand picked trios go Tanton (vocals, trumpet, flugelhorn), pianist Alan Law and bassist Paul Grainger are as good as any when it comes to interpreting the sound of '60s Brazil. CorcovadoHere Comes That Rainy Day and a host of others spread across two engaging sets made for a wonderful afternoon here in Gateshead.

Main man Tanton was reluctant to try his Portuguese given that a Brazilian happened to be in the audience! Agua de Beber (sung in English), Black OrpheusTravessia (Milton Nasimento's Bridges), our trumpeter and flugelhorn maestro paid fitting tribute to Astrud. Tanton's intimate, sincere vocals enthralled, it's as if the audience held a collective breath. Pianist Alan Law and bassist Paul Grainger played their parts to perfection, what better way to spend a lazy summer's afternoon than listening to the bossa nova? Russell
