Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Suzanne Fonseca Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - July 30

(© Jeff Pritchard)
Suzanne Fonseca (trombone); Jim Faulkner (guitar); Dave Tompkins (bass); Danny Ward (drums)

Lots of great tunes were played tonight and it was hard to select any high spots as all the numbers sounded fine to me. Suzanne knows how to pick musicians that are conducive to her brand of jazz and tonight’s line-up benefited by the inclusion of Dave Tompkins, a bass player who I would describe as being outstanding, along with Danny Ward who is a drummer who always gets things swinging.

Sometimes, on previous gigs here, Suzanne has used a pianist but on this occasion she brought along guitarist Jim Faulkner who I love to hear as he has great ideas and a really good sound. All of his solos were interesting and well constructed and I for one love the blend of guitar and trombone.

There is not much else to say except that the evening ended with Suzanne playing her signature tune Besame Mucho to great acclaim. The next jazz night at the Railway is Tuesday August 1 with the Ed Kainyek Quartet. Mike Farmer
