Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Ben Crosland Quartet @ the Railway, Stockport - July 23

(© Jeff Pritchard)
Ben Crosland (bass); Rod Mason (alto/sop/tenor sax); Dean Stockdale (keys); Dave Tyas (drums)

It was a rainy night in Stockport but the Sunday night jazz fans were all there and things got off to a good start with Wayne Shorter’s great tune One By One, Rod Mason sounding good on alto and tenor. Crosland likes to include some tunes written by the Kinks and tonight he played three of their compositions but also we heard some interesting tunes by Jaco Pastorius, Bob Mintzer, Derek Nash and a few of Crosland's own numbers.

I thought, at times, the sound level was a bit too loud but this could be due to Dave Tyas being often involved in big bands. But you do need a  saxman with a big sound in a band like this and Rod Mason fits the bill perfectly. It's always  good to see Dean Stockdale, his solos were well received and I liked his sound when he switched to organ mode.

The evening concluded with a lively version of Derek Nash’s Voodoo Rex.

The next jazz night at the Railway is on Tuesday July 25 with the Paul Hartley Quartet featuring Liam Byrne. Mike Farmer

One by One; Waterloo Sunset; Sunshine and Showers; Three Views of a Secret; Solway Stories; Crossborder Blues; All Day and All of the Night; Sunny Afternoon; Blues for Jeff; The Cost of Living; Mr Fonebone; Voodoo Rex.
