Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Spice 'n' Space - The Funk Thing

Mattan Klein (flute/piccolo); Uria Mader (drums); Ohad Niceberg (guitar); Toki Stern (Rhodes/Hammond/keys); Yoni Ben Ari (bass)

We don't get many albums by Israeli jazz-funk groups so, I was unsure what to expect. However, more out of curiosity than anything else, I decided to give it a listen - in for an angora, in for a shekel - which turned out not to be a bad decision!

It's very much a retro Blue Note setting and there's nothing wrong with that. In Klein you have a flautist who can funk it up with the best of them. A great sound that varies between classical purity and the throaty growl that jazz rockers often adopt.

Co-leader Mader drums sympathetically whilst there are effective contributions from guitar, bass and Hammond.

Klein, Mader and Niceberg  provided the material - three each including a dual collaboration between Mader and Niceberg on the final track - Jet Lag an infectious foot-tapping funky groove. If you like Herbie Mann, Grant Green, Lou Donaldson or early Herbie then you will want to check this one out.

It's due to be released by Ubuntu Music on August 4 in both CD and digital format. Lance

The Thong; Blues in E; Picc Your Battle; The Search For the Missing Cable; Three's Breeze Freeze; What's the Use of Falling; Found it - Keepin' it; Jet Lag.
