This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Ten tenor sax players I never heard live

Gene Ammons, Chu Berry, Benny Golson, Wardell Gray, Joe Henderson, Eddie Miller, Hank Mobley, Brew Moore, Sonny Rollins, Lester Young.

These are just a few of those I missed. Be interesting to read your lists of whoever and on whatever instrument you missed out on catching live. Lance

I think I missed all the greats, Miles, Coltrane, Ellington, Mingus, Pastorious, Jarrett. I can't think of anyone at that level I have seen!

10 Bassists I never heard live

Curley Russell, Tommy Potter, Charles Mingus, Israel Crosby, Scott LaFaro, Teddy Kotick, Bob Whitlock,Red Mitchell, Bill Crow, Carson Smith.

These are not in any particular order.
I could probably find another 10 !
There have been many "fakirs" in jazz on the bass over the years ! Not so now with hifi recordings and improved amplification bringing the instrument to the forefront.

As a younger brother I missed the Middlesbrough Festival, Weather Report and Herbie in early eighties. Over the years, I've more than caught up in terms of quantity but never in greatness, though I may see an old Herbie soon and I saw an old Wayne Shorter.

I would estimate I never saw any of the twenty greatest ever (though I suspect history hasn't finished with Wayne yet) but I imagine even old Lance was too young for many of them.

Seen a fair wack of great rock, blues and soul acts mind, though missed a few too.
