This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Album review: Walter Bishop Jr. - Bish at the Bank. Live in Baltimore

A truly eye-opening double album. I'd only heard Bishop on early bop recordings with Bird, Getz and Mobley where his role was primarily that of accompanist with only the odd 32 bar solo here and there. Just enough to let you know he was up for the gig and, let's face it, if he wasn't able to cut it he wouldn't have been moving in such exalted company although they did have other things in common...

Those 'things' that were so common back in the day have, hopefully, long vanished even though it has to be acknowledged that some of the greatest jazz was played by musicians who had had more than a small sherry or a stick of tea. That Bishop served time is now history along with Keats' use of opium and Dickens' morphine habit ... the list goes on.

That is all by the by now and what is revealed here is just how vastly underrated a pianist Bishop was. On these 1966/7 live recordings he holds his own by comparision with contemporary pianists such as Hampton Hawes and the emerging Ramsey Lewis.

Another outstanding player deserving of a higher profile is Harold Vick who impresses on  both saxes and flute. Despite an impressive discography that, apart from albums under his own name, includes sessions with organists McGriff, McDuff, Holmes and Shirley Scott as well as Silver and Blakey. Mention his name at a local jam session and I doubt that, apart from Dave Weisser, anyone will respond with other than a blank stare. Hopefully I'll be proved wrong.

These days there is so much great music emerging from the vaults, the closets, the attics and the cellars that just can't be ignored. This is the music that BSH was created for and, although over the past fifteen years we have diversified in many directions, this is where my heart lies and if I ever had any doubts they are dispelled by this release.
