Sad to learn of the passing of clarinettist Wally Fawkes at the grand old age of 98. One of the pioneer British revivalists he is probably best remembered for his playing on the early recordings by the Humphrey Lyttleton band. His rich woody tone helping to authenticate the New Orleans' sound the band sort to recreate.
He left Humph when the band moved towards a more mainstream approach although he did eventually gravitate in that direction himself when he led his own bands.
Away from music, Fawkes achieved recognition by the wider public as 'Trog', the cartoonist responsible for the comic strip Flook that ran for many years in various newspapers. He also contributed to several satirical magazines. The wordsmiths in those early ventures included Humph and George Melly.
