Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview: Frank Sinatra Night - Saturday (April 1)

BBC 2 devotes much of Saturday evening to Frank Sinatra. From 7:35pm it's non-stop Sinatra all the way through to gone midnight.

Frank Sinatra: a Man and His Music + Ella + Jobim (7:35pm) is a TV special from 1967 in which Sinatra is joined by Ella Fitzgerald and Antonio Carlos Jobim.

At 8:25pm it's Frank Sinatra at the Royal Festival Hall (from 1970) singing I've Got You Under My Skin, The Lady is a Tramp, My Kind of Town and more.

At 9:20pm, Frank Sinatra: the Voice of the Century, an Arena special from 1998, profiles Ol' Blues Eyes, featuring interviews with some of his friends, and at 10:55pm, it's the 1956 feature film High Society (Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, Louis Armstrong). We've seen it all before, but hey, it's Frank Sinatra! Russell

Looks like Saturday night isn't gonna be the loneliest night of the week after all, providing I can find a lady who is a tramp and who will come fly with me to the moon and dance cheek to cheek with me into the wee small hours of the morning otherwise I'll be in a bar at a quarter to three saying "set 'em up Joe"but, what's new? Maybe I'll meet someone with a laughing face or a broad who Artie Shaw kicked out. Still that's life, and I'm gonna live till I die and when I do I'll do it my way but who knows where or when?
