Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Jim Witzel Trio & Quartet - Feelin' It

Jim Witzel (guitar); Brian Ho (B3); Jason Lewis (drums) + Dann Zinn (tenor sax on 3 tks).

Some good old down home bluesy funkified soul as typified by 1960s Blue Note artists such as Jimmy Smith, McDuff and McGriff mixed in with some standards and The Beatles' Norwegian Wood which I suppose these days can also be classed as a standard.

Five trio tracks - the standards - and three quartet work outs on Witzel originals. It's music to listen to, to dance to, to imagine you're in a bar, not necessarily a jazz joint, back then in any big American city, although probably not Nashville.

In this case we're in the Bay Area of Northern California and it's not 1962 it's 2022 but the feelin' is there with perhaps more polish.

However, don't get the idea that this is a 'smoothie' - when any of the four let their hair down (which is most of the time) the earth moves.

They may not be household names in the UK and known only to the perceptive few outside of their home state in the US but, if this gets the coverage it deserves then that could certainly change. Lance

Feelin' It; Softly as in a Morning Sunrise; Norwegian Wood; Beyond Beijing; I Loves You, Porgy; If Ever I Would Leave You; Ms. Information; The Old Country.
