This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Steve Oakes Band @ the Railway, Stockport, featuring Freddie Garner - Sept 6

The guest tonight, Freddie Garner, likes to hit a groove right from the start and the opening Monk tune Straight no Chaser was a good choice to commence what turned out to be a very enjoyable gig. Freddie, who has been active on the local modern jazz scene for as long as I can remember, is still a major force and currently leads his own excellent quartet that appears here on a regular basis. Tonight Ed Kainyek was sounding great and I thought he had a more mellow tone on most of the tunes played than when I heard him last. In fact the whole band got the sound balance just about right and I was pleased to see Steve only using his effects pedals on one tune.

Ed likes the compositions of Grover Washington and we heard Ed’s version of Limelight which was well received by the Tuesday night audience. Freddie called a tune that he wrote for his son Paul - a catchy little number called Paulus - and Ed played this to perfection. Many of the tunes were standards especially in the second half except for one which no one could recall the title of but it sounded a bit like Moose the Mooche by Charlie Parker.


Mention must be made of the superb rhythm team of Gavin and Tim who kept things on course and did some creative soloing when called for.


The next jazz night at the Railway is Sunday Sept 11 with the Gaz Hughes Quartet - Mike Farmer
