Bebop Spoken There

Jools Holland (on his 2026 spring/summer tour): ''With the mighty [R&B] Orchestra, our wonderful boogie woogie singers, and the brilliant Joe Webb opening the shows [including Darlington Hippodrome, June 19], we're in for some very special evenings of music.'' The Northern Echo February 5, 2026

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

The Central Bar Quintet plays Grant Green - Monday 12

Joe Steels (guitar); Jamie Toms (tenor sax); Alan Law (piano); Mick Shoulder (double bass); John Bradford (drums) + Harry Keeble (tenor sax); Abbie Finn (drums); Pete Tanton (trumpet); Ben Swann-Tanton (vocals)

The Central Bar, second Monday in the month, a classic album - invariably from the Blue Note label - played by the house band plus guest(s) followed by a jam session. A simple format and it works. This evening's offering, Grant Green's 1964 Blue Note recording Solid...

Tyne Valley based guitarist Joe Steels joined the house band and from the off this was a cracker of a gig. Six numbers, beginning with Minor League, it never ceases to amaze how these guys can look at a chart with scarcely a moment's notice and make something of the material. The small group format enables Jamie Toms to stretch out, hearing him play tenor on these sessions has been revelatory and this evening was no exception.

George Russell's Ezz-thetic from 1961, Grant Green's own composition Grant's Tune, the Central Bar Quintet soon got to grips with the material, then some. Twenty four hours earlier pianist Alan Law was in accompanist mode to Ruth Lambert, here on Half Moon Lane at the Gateshead end of the High Level Bridge, he was playing like a modern jazz demon, albeit with his own signature sound. Bass and drums - Mick Shoulder and John Bradford - came out swinging, as a unit the CBQ is a band you've just got to hear.

Following the album set it was good to see several familiar faces waiting their turn at the advertised jam session (sit in and it's free admission!). Harry Keeble blew his now-to-be-expected assured tenor, drummer Abbie Finn demonstrated yet again that she is on the A-list, and then we heard from Pete Tanton (excellent trumpet playing) and Ben Swann-Tanton singing Moondance.

It had been another great session. The next opportunity to catch the Central Bar Quintet is Monday 10 October. And don't get caught out, it's a prompt 7:30pm start. Russell

Set list: Minor LeagueEzz-thetic; Grant's Tune; SolidThe KickerWives and Lovers.
