Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview: Jeff Barnhart - Newcastle & Darlington

American piano virtuoso Jeff Barnhart is heading to Newcastle and Darlington! Hailing from the town of Mystic in Connecticut, Barnhart, a virtuoso musician, historian, raconteur and ebullient, larger than life character visits these shores - pandemic notwithstanding - on a regular basis. An authority on jazz piano from the turn of the twentieth century (ragtime, stride, swing), in addition to to his brilliant piano playing, Barnhart (pictured earlier this year in Darlington) is the man to tell you anything and everything about the music and its practitioners. What did James P Johnson have for breakfast on Saturday 1 October 1921? If anybody knows, it's Jeff Barnhart!

Barnhart's two appearances in the region are guaranteed to draw full houses. Indeed, his first engagement (solo piano) at Newcastle's Lit & Phil on Friday 16 September (1:00pm) has already sold out.The following day (Saturday 17 September, 12:30pm) at St Augustine's Parish Centre in Darlington Barnhart will be holding court with his Barrel House Boys - that's Tom 'Spats' Langham (banjo, guitar, vocals) and percussionist extraordinaire Nick Ward. No advance tickets for this one, simply turn up at the Larchfield Street venue well before the advertised 12:30 start and pay a tenner at the door.

Call the Lit & Phil on 0191 232 0192 to ask that your name be added to the waiting list! Russell
