Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

So How Did The Indigos Special Gig - September 8 @ The Globe - Go?

Superbly indeed. You should kick yourself if you weren't there, because you missed a good night of jazz standards, some surprises, and sheer fun. You're not getting a full review because I was too busy enjoying the evening to write notes. See the previous item which lists the Indigos themselves, all very individual singers, and it would be unfair to single out anyone for special mention.

The engine room musicians (Alan, Paul and Rob - Law, Grainger and Walker) were on top form as you would expect, with memorable solos on piano from Alan. The guest musicians, David Gray (trombone) and Pete Tanton (trumpet) contributed greatly, sounding especially vampish on Why Don't You Do Right?  Singer Paul Close became an instrumentalist also when he accompanied himself on jazz guitar.

And then there was the dancing! A couple seated at the front jived and capered wonderfully on some of the songs. During the song After Midnight (J J Cale), a surprise item in itself, lots of others joined the dancers, and a good time was had by all.

Enough said. You'll have another chance to go to an Indigo gig in October. Watch this space for details. Ann Alex
