Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Live from Emmet's Place with Lucy Yeghiazaryan - March 28

Lucy Yeghiazarayan (vocals); Emmet Cohen (piano); Mark Lewandowski (double bass); Joe Farnsworth (drums) + Benny Benack III (trumpet)

Wow! Wow! Wow! Emmet Cohen's latest stream from Emmet's Place presented vocalist Lucy Yeghiazaryan. Pianist Cohen's regular bass and drums - Russell Hall and Kyle Poole - were given the night off as our host was joined by Nottingham-born, NYC-resident Mark Lewandowski and first call drummer Joe Farnsworth. The trio would play a couple of numbers before being joined by Ms Yeghiazaryan.

Over the next hour and a half or so the Armenian-born, NYC-resident vocalist would win herself a whole load more online fans. An impeccable set list, Yeghiazaryan is an amazing talent - phrasing, timing, commanding, echoes of the great vocalists, how can anybody be this good?! From This Moment OnPerdidoEasy StreetThe Girl from Ipanema sung in Portuguese, Young at Heart, Ms Yeghiazaryan is destined for stardom.

What's more, Mr Benny Benack III was in the house! Our trumpet playing vocalist joined the party for a few numbers, his trumpet playing on the closing number, the blues Your Red Wagon, couldn't be bettered. It's a fair bet Lucy Yeghiazaryan will appear in London (Ronnie's?). As and when she does, don't hesitate.  Russell
