As a change from my normal visit to the Railway in Stockport I decided to check out the jam session night at the Slug and Lettuce, 651 Wilmslow Rd, Didsbury M20 6QZ. The weekly Tuesday night jazz sessions at this venue are organised by Janet Higgins who does a great job in booking the bands and. under the title Creative Space, provides an opportunity for both established musicians and newcomers to perform.
One of the things I like about jam sessions is that you never know who is going to appear and tonight there were at least a couple of the participants who impressed me greatly whom I’d not seen before. One was Zack on tenor sax who played a great solo on Yardbird Suite and the other was a guitarist called Kevin who sat in on Coltrane’s Equinox. Someone mentioned that Zack had taken over leading the Manchester based big band the Whole Hog which was formerly lead by bass player Stuart Riley.
Looking back on the evening I also enjoyed Rick Burrows who did some nice muted work on My Funny Valentine and Keith McGee who always amazes me with his facility on the Melodica. I think that this has been one of the better jam sessions that I have attended and long may they continue.
Next jazz night at the Slug is the Julie Edwards Trio. Mike Farmer (pictured).
Blue Monk; Georgia on my Mind; Equinox; Ain't Misbehavin; My Funny Valentine; Solar; Yardbird Suite; Softly as in a Morning Sunrise; Have You Met Miss Jones?
