It was nice to have Ian's band back at Dormans for the first time since before the lockdown. Formed from local musicians well known to the audience they were duly appreciated as they started the night with a fine version of Mercy Mercy followed by Stanley Turrentine's Sugar with tasty solos from Ian, Josh and Peter with excellent drum and bass backing from Mark and Ron.
Since I Fell For You featured Josh on alto who showed his skills in improvising without straying too far from the melody. Ian was featured in George Benson's Affirmation followed by the lovely Oliver Nelson number Stolen Moments as played by Lee Ritenour on his album of the same name. The first session was then brought to a close with the Yellow Jackets' Revelation.
The second set began with Steely Dan's Josie and then, in contrast, a nice driving version of Summertime before things really livened up with Jaco Pastorius' The Chicken. After Cantaloupe Island the evening was brought to a close with a great rhythmic Jazz Crusaders number Put It Where You Want It.
The Ian Bosworth Quartet plus Josh Bentham played well together before an appreciative audience and in the process I'm sure helped to keep the jazz club thriving.
