This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Gareth Lockrane's big band masterclass @ Durham University - March 2

Durham University Jazz Society booked flautist, bandleader, arranger, composer and educator Gareth Lockrane to conduct a midweek big band masterclass. Arriving at Mount Oswald Hub with minutes to spare before the advertised 1:30pm start, Lockrane got straight down to business. 

Two ensembles would be put through their paces. The award-winning Durham University Big Band and Durham University Jazz Orchestra, just two of several big bands in the university town. Lockrane had been prepped on the charts the students were working on and it didn't take long for the London based musician to get a feel for the group and the form the afternoon's workshop should take. 

Lockrane suggested all instruments should begin by playing a cycle of keys. Humming of phrases and handclapping followed, seemingly rudimentary but effective. Much technical talk of dominant chords, diminished this, minor sevenths that. All participants were up to speed. 

Charts were dissected, Lockrane's attuned ear instantly identifying keys, notes (some bum, some not), suggesting a slower tempo to allow the ensemble to hear more easily the chart's constituent parts. Master practitioners, composers and arrangers were name-checked - Basie, Ellington, Thad Jones, Mel Lewis et al.   

Vocalist Elen Clarke impressed. On Saturday she'll be at the Great North Big Band Jazz Festival*, if you're going, you'll be impressed by Ms Clarke. Tom Parker led the DUBB trumpet section, alongside his section mates Zak Eastop, Catherine Flanders and Charlotte Ward, these guys could be in the running for a 'best section' award. 

Gareth Lockrane's easy-going manner in a supportive environment made for an enjoyable afternoon.

* The annual Great North Big Band Jazz Festival begins tomorrow (Friday) at eight o'clock. Saturday (that's when the Durham University Big Band will be competing) and Sunday are competition days (11:00am start).
