Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Preview: John J Williamson Trio - Durham & Saltburn Feb 3 & 4

John J Williamson will be in the region over the next couple of days. It'll be something of a homecoming for bassist John who grew up in the area before heading out into the big, wide world to undertake non-music academic studies. As a student John was MD of Leeds University Union Big Band, in addition to working with the Durham University Big Band.

It's likely music as a career remained an option - grade 8 piano (distinction), grade 8 violin - and a move to Washington DC led to him gigging and recording with some of the capital state's finest jazz musicians.

Returning to London with an impressive CV tucked into his back pocket, John has worked with many top names, including Matt Anderson, Lianne Carroll, Rachael Cohen, Will Arnold-Foster, Alex Garnett, Helena Kay and Sam Leak.

Tomorrow (Thursday, 7:30pm) John's trio - Alex Hitchcock, saxophones, Jay Davis, drums - will be in concert in Durham University's music department on Palace Green, adjacent to Durham Cathedral. It's a fiver admission at the door. On Friday evening (Feb. 4) John's trio will be playing a gig at Saltburn Arts (7:30pm, £12.00.). So, not one, but two opportunities to hear the John J Williamson Trio. Telly off, coat on, there's a jazz gig to go to! Russell
