Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

National Youth Jazz Orchestra @ The Fire Station, Sunderland - Feb. 10

(Pic by Lance)
The personnel listed below is undoubtedly less than 100% correct. The trumpet section included another woman as well as Ruby Barber plus Matt Robinson and the pianist was making his (impressive) debut with the band and I didn't catch his full name. It's difficult to write down names whilst clapping so apologies to all who aren't mentioned as well as to those who are mentioned and weren't there! Corrections will be much appreciated.

One person who most certainly was there was Lucy-Anne Daniels who perfectly captured the spirit of Amy without losing her own identity. This was a powerhouse performance that will long live in the memory. Just as Amy's own career was launched with NYJO then surely Ms Daniels' own star is equally in the ascendent.

Add a band studded with amazing soloists - young only in years - an MD expertly controlling the 22 musicians under his command made this a performance that fully deserved the standing ovation accorded by a packed audience in a very impressive addition to Sunderland's cultural scene.
