Preview: The Great North Big Band Jazz Festival (March 4-6)

It's that time of year again, it's the return of the Great North Big Band Jazz Festival (GNBBJF)! On Friday (March 4), starting with a double bill of big bands, the GNBBJF is back! As we know all too well, the pandemic brought an abrupt halt to just about everything, including the 2021 edition of the much-loved Chester le Street extravaganza. At eight o'clock on Friday evening there is the mouth-watering hors d'oeuvres of Mick Donnelly's Musicians Unlimited and the specially-assembled Festival Big Band. And there's more, much more...
Saturday and Sunday are the GNBBJF's competition days. Saturday sees the senior bands battling it out for the coveted title. Bolton's Managers Big Band walked off with the trophy on each of the last three editions of the event. Is there a band good enough to knock them off their perch? Turn up at 11:00am to hear a full day of big band jazz and learn the adjudicators' verdict! Sunday features schools and youth bands. It's another early start (11:00am) with the magnificent Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra defending its crown. The Great North Big Band Jazz Festival is one of the events of the year. It's a fiver admission on Friday, a tenner Saturday and a tenner Sunday. The entire weekend at Park View Community Centre (just off Front Street) is highly recommended. Russell
