The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Adrian Cox: Jazz at Vespers with George Lewis - Feb. 20

Adrian Cox (clarinet, vocals); Finlay Milne (trumpet, vocals); Simon Picton (banjo); Richard Simmons (piano); Alyn Shipton (double bass)

Alyn Shipton's band is on the road playing a few gigs. Adrian Cox is in the band and he took the opportunity to set up a Sunday lunchtime live stream featuring the five piece outfit. Shipton's hospitality made for a relaxed session in which to play music associated with George Lewis, particularly focusing on Lewis's 1954 Jazz at Vespers session, recorded 68 years ago tomorrow (February 21) at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Oxford, Ohio.

Throughout lockdown Cox has presented a weekly streamed session, invariably as an online solo performance, occasionally with a guest, so this afternoon's 'full band' gig worked a treat. From Bye and Bye to The Climax Rag, Shipton and co strolled through the repertoire. Trumpeter Finlay Milne impressed, with and without his mute, singing one number into the bargain. Richard Simmons (the man played with George Lewis!) made the best of an ailing-sounding piano, Simon Picton, banjo, anchored the rhythm alongside JRR presenter, bassist Shipton.*

Jerusalem (aka Burgundy Street Blues, it's a Sunday hence Jerusalem), superb clarinet, the session flew by and in no time Adrian and the boys signed off with The Climax Rag. As and when these guys pitch up at a venue near you, don't miss them!

Join Alyn Shipton later this afternoon for today's edition of Jazz Record Requests (BBC Radio 3, 4:00pm). Russell
