This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Album review: Wendy Kirkland - Latin Lowdown Live

Wendy Kirkland (piano/voice); Pat Sprakes (guitar); Roger Beaujolais (vibes); Wayne Matthews (bass guitar); Steve Wyndham (drums); Jon Richmond (Latin perc.)

During the first of the lockdowns one of the more alleviating factors was watching livestreams by Wendy and hubby Pat on Facebook and YouTube. Invariably there were many Latin numbers played which ultimately evolved into this live set recorded at Chesterfield Jazz Club on Nov. 28 last year.

It's a cracker! Close your eyes and you're in Havana or Rio. It's pulsating in the way that only Latin rhythms can be. Updated Shearing, Tjader and Chucho Valdes and, of course, Jobim. In fact Jobim's son Paulo Jobim contributed His Smile which is definitely a chip off the old block!

Wendy has the Latin style off pat as indeed has Pat. All six players play as to the manner born with Wendy's vocals adding an additional piquancy. 

Special mention of Roger Beaujolais on vibes - one of the UK's grandmasters.
