Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: David Finck - BASSic Instinct

Finck's c.v. includes touring and recording with Woody Herman, Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole, André Previn and a host of pop stars prior to becoming one of New York's first-call bassists and bandleaders adept in any musical situation as this album proves.

A choice selection of standards and Finck originals all given a new twist and all peppered with impressive solos from, but not exclusively, Snitzer, Davis, Johnson, Mann, Ruby and, of course, the leader whose rich tone whether plucked or bowed adds an extra dimension. Strangely, Ryan Quigley plays on a couple of tracks although he doesn't solo.

Vocals from Penteriche and Curless on Bateu, Leyou/Who's Wrong or Right? Kelly Mittleman on So What  and Melissa Errico on I Remember provide the icing on a very tasty delicacy. Watch out for an exciting new album out now by Errico that was produced by David Finck - Lance

Bassic Instinct; The Best Thing For You Would be me; Dearly Beloved; Theme From Mannix; Bateu, Leyou/Who's Wrong or Right?; Seascape; Tea For Two; Joy; So What; Soon It's Gonna Rain; Tico Tico No Fubá; I'm Confessin'; I Remember.

David Finck (bass) + (collective): Quinn Johnson, Philippe Saisse (keys); Teo Lima, Eric Halvorson, Cliff Almond, Clint de Ganon (drums); Ryan Quigley, Barry Danielian (trumpet); Andy Snitzer (tenor saxophone); Mike Davis (trombone); Tedd Firth, Meg Ruby (piano); Kevin Winard (drums/perc); Bob Mann, Nelson Faria (guitar); Laura Conwesser (flute); Téka Penteriche, Trist Curless, Kelly Mittleman, Melissa Errico (vocals).
