Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

The Independence Trio @ St James' & St Basil's, Newcastle - July 4

Keith Robinson (alto sax); Graham Don (keyboards); Ian Paterson (bass guitar)

The weather forecast would play an important role in the day's music. On American Independence Day, the scratch Independence Trio made provision to play in the grounds of St James' and St Basil's Church with the option to move indoors to the church hall thanks to a less than brilliant forecast with thundery showers a real possibility. By lunchtime a decision was taken to play the gig in the church itself. Shortly afterwards, thanks to an improved forecast, we were back to square one, we'd be outdoors in the church gardens.

Come three o'clock the sun shone. Multi-reeds player Keith Robinson would restrict himself to alto sax, working alongside Strictly Smokin' band mate, pianist Graham Don, and the ever-adaptable Ian Paterson on bass guitar. A well-populated church grounds would hear two short sets of standards kicking-off with In a Mellotone.

A Day in the Life of a Fool/Black Orpheus threw up a surprise - Graham Don 'singing', à la George Benson's wordless vocals, voice in unison with keyboard! Up Jumped Spring followed by Joy Spring hinted at a theme but more of Don's vocals on No More Blues put paid to that theory!

My Foolish Heart featured sensitive contributions from all three men, perhaps the tune of the day. All the Things You Are, Joe Henderson's Recorda Me and Bye Bye Blackbird rounded off an enjoyable afternoon basking in summer sunshine. Russell
