This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Cécile, Jazz Jamaica & Pops (July 10)

On BBC Radio today (Saturday) there is the opportunity to hear Cécile McLorin Salvant in a recent concert recording from San Francisco accompanied by pianist Sullivan Fortner (J to Z, Radio 3, 5:00pm). Vying for your attention over on Radio 4 Extra at 5:30 is a repeat of a 2002 edition of Great Lives looking at Louis Armstrong. In the week of Pops' death half a century ago, the programme hears the thoughts of Armstrong biographer Laurence Bergreen and Chris Barber. And Radio 4's Loose Ends (6:15pm) includes music from the mighty Jazz Jamaica. Russell
