Apart from Bosch's pursuit of killers, dealers and other miscreants, his love of music and jazz in particular never fails to shine through.
Holmes may have solved his cases with a pipe or three of opium but, had Sherlock and Harry been contemporaries, Harry would have busted him!
Narcotics are at the heart of this crime - Black Ice being a killer drug from Mexico - and Harry is unofficially, on the case, not least because he likes the victim's widow.
When the case breaks it's Christmas Eve and he's home, alone, having his Christmas dinner, a glass or two of red wine and listening to John Coltrane's Song of the Underground Railway.
All of Connelly's Harry Bosch novels have jazz references and you can almost taste the wine and hear the music.
Bosch is the best Californian cop - private or otherwise - since Phillip Marlowe.

A good choice Lance. I have read and enjoyed all of the Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch books not least because of the Jazz references. I am looking forward to the next one which is due out in November.
I am a huge fan of Michael Connelly - an absolute addict!
I've not heard him mention any jazz violin in his stories yet but always enjoy the music references. Maybe I need to write to him about that...
