The Railway has been presenting live jazz for about ten years and features a host of outstanding local jazz musicians as well as some from further afield such as Alan Barnes, Simon Spillett. Greg Abate, Frank Griffiths, Neal Yates and Dean Masser. If you like modern jazz with a melodic approach this is the place to be.
Ray, the landlord, has done a great job re-opening the pub for live music in spite of the huge amount of roadworks that were causing disruption on the main A6 from Manchester to Stockport. The rain no doubt kept a few people from attending but I’m glad I went as the band were in fine form.
Jim Collins played tenor sax on all the numbers except Yardbird Suite which featured his hard-edged alto. It’s good to see Jim and Paul back in action again as they work well together and Eryl kept things cooking along. Ed Harrison is an outstanding bass player and with him on board the time is rock-solid!
The tunes played were as follows: What is This Thing Called Love?; On Green Dolphin Street; Bags Groove; Cheesecake; Meditation; There is no Greater Love; Yardbird Suite; Ladybird; Up Jumped Spring; Old Folks; Tenor Madness
The next jazz event at the Railway is Sunday July 11 and is the Mike Hall Quartet which I believe will feature Richard Weatherall piano and Ed and Erryl again on bass and drums alongside Mike on sax. Should be a great gig.
The Railway is located at 74-76 Wellington Road North Stockport SK4 1HF Tel 0161 477 3680. Mike Farmer
