This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Sometimes it seems as though St Valentine's Day is bigger than Christmas Day which isn't a bad thing as although you may not get as many presents you do get better songs! At least we did during Emma Smith's Feb. 14 live stream from Ronnie's.

It all kicked off quite amazingly! Emma somehow managing to intertwine lines from about half-dozen different standards before going into L.O.V.E. that then morphed into More and back again - are you still with me?

All clever stuff!

Bernstein's I'm Lucky to be me; Moody's Mood For Love and My Heart Belongs to Daddy kept things moving along until a change of pace was called for.

And how!

There's No Business Like Show Business was taken at an almost funereal tempo drawing attention to the financial plight of performers in all branches of the arts.

Back in the groove with The Frim Fram Sauce; The Gershwins' Slap That Bass (last heard sung by Fred Astaire in the film Shall We Dance?); The obligatory My Funny Valentine done rather differently and the classic Nice Girls Don't Stay For Breakfast brought us into the home straight.

And so we rode out the storm that Emma and the tremendous trio had blown up. Safir was simply superb.
