Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: The David Anģel Jazz Ensemble - Out on the Coast

I'm not going to lay down chapter and verse on this one - it's a triple CD for goodness sake!

Suffice to say that, if over the years, your tastes have leaned towards Miles' 1949 nonet, Gil Evans, Marty Paich or the Gerry Mulligan Concert Band then this is very much for you. The arrangements are as cool as a Pfizer vaccine on the rocks - neither shaken nor stirred.

The soloists too are the perfect antidote to the lockdown blues. Cipriano's alto on Prelude to a Kiss adds a new dimension to the Ellington/Hodges classic. Carr's baritone solos, Dane's trumpet, Whitfield's trombone, Anģel and Jim Quam swapping tenor choruses are just some of the delights to savour - not forgetting to mention the gorgeous sax section sounds that pepper the charts.

More info on the graphic.
Highly recommended.
Lance.

Available from today (Feb. 19) on Bassett Hound Music.

David Anģel (tenor sax/MD); Phil Feather, Gene Cipriano, Jim Quam,Tom Peterson, Bob Carr (reeds); Jonathan Dane, Ron Stout (trumpet/flugel); Stephanie O'Keefe; Scott Whitfield (trombone); Jim Self (tuba/bass trombone); John Chiodini (guitar); Susan Quam (bass); Paul Kreibich (drums).
