Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Tim Hegarty Quartet live streaming from Small's, NYC - Feb. 11

Tim Hegarty (tenor sax); Charlie Sigler (guitar); Dishan Harper (double bass); Winard Harper (drums)

Saxophonist Tim Hegarty has been on the New York scene for thirty years. An MA from Queen's College under the guidance of Jimmy Heath and Donald Byrd, gigs with Gil Evans and the Mingus Big Band, working with Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, Carmen McRae and many others, Hegarty's cv is as good as any. This evening's set from Small's presented Hegarty's quartet which included drummer Winard Harper.

Hegarty played tenor sax, and, as on previous sessions from the Greenwich Village venue, the horn player wasn't on a mic. No doubt this is fine if you're lucky enough to be sitting close up in the smallest of rooms, listening online is another matter! A couple of tunes by Jimmy Heath, Frank Wess' Once is Not Enough with guitarist Charlie Sigler swinging the blues, Sigler again on Larry Willis' To Wisdom, the Prize, this quartet gig was well worth catching.

Ronnell Bright's Sweet Pumpkin was rudely interrupted by a bout of internet buffering. Service resumed with the great Winard Harper swiping brushes all over his compact kit with nephew Dishan Harper holding it down on bass. A cookin' Far Away Lands (comp. J. Heath) concluded an excellent set.
