Permutations of trios at Smitty's come and go but tonight was tops in that every one seemed to have lifted his game that one notch higher. I'm not going to name my Man of the Match as everyone who watched it will have their own choice. Music is a shared thing, or at least it should be - it was tonight.
So, let's do away with the A was better than B but not as good as C scenario and agree that they each hit the jackpot and that Papa Jo Jones would have been proud of them.
Papa Jo? Yes, this was a playback session based on a 1959 (was there ever a bad record made that year?) album by the former Basie drummer, Jo Jones.
Ray Bryant, the pianist on the original album wrote Philadelphia Bound and our guys arrived in Philly right alongside him. Desch segued into Splanky and Will, who must have stayed for a sleepover after last night, impressed. There was more to come from Mr Bassman.
A comfortable Close Your Eyes was followed by Jive at Five which was taken far too fast for comfort although it did allow Gordon to play some stride.
All was forgiven after one of the nicest versions of Embraceable You that I've heard in recent years. When Your Lover Has Gone wasn't far behind it either.
I Got Rhythm enabled Jason to prove that he most certainly has got rhythm with a solo that had the emojis working overtime in the comments column. Sticks or brushes, he's your man.
Tonight's history lesson was more recent and all three students graduated with honours.
