Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

KSTV: Live stream - Feb. 16

Riley Stone-Lonergan (tenor sax); Harry Diplock, Kourosh Kanani (guitars); Ferg Ireland (bass).

A little out of the norm for KS but, nevertheless, quite interesting. They'd only convened that day, although the guitarists knew each other from various European gypsy jazz events, but this their first meeting with the tenor saxist and Diplock struggled with his name, "Ronnie Lonnegon?" It sounded almost like Lonnie Donegan!

Fortunately, once they'd hit the deck with Charlie Parker's Segment, it became obvious we would be unlikely to hear  My Old Man's a Dustman.

Stone-Lonergan's playing I found surprising - pleasantly so I hasten to add. Most recently featured on BSH as part of the QOW TrioRSL is a forward thinking player not afraid to storm the citadel. Here his anarchistic tendencies were held in check and he blew some booting mainstream tenor albeit not without losing sight of later developments.

The guitars were a different kettle of fish and, brilliant players that they are, I think I'd have preferred to hear them in an actual Hot Club setting. However, these are minor points compared to the big picture which was to please the punters and, judging by the comments, that is what they did.

Ferg Ireland turns up, does the gig (superbly, no matter who with) and says "See you soon".

An excellent programme: Segment; Just Friends; I Fall in Love Too Easily; Something's Up (Doug Raney) and Just One of Those Things took us up to the commercial break.

A couple of numbers by the two guitars - The Peacocks and an unannounced piece - got things going again before Ferg and Riley returned for All of You and Caravan. The latter's blast on the latter tune was something else and made the evening all worth while.
