Bebop Spoken There

Gary Bartz: ''Charlie Parker was my introduction to the religion of music. And so he's always with me .'' - Downbeat November 2025.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Adrian Cox live streaming 'My favourite clarinettist' - Feb. 28

Adrian Cox (clarinet, vocals)

Adrian Cox is currently basking in early spring sunshine at a hotel spa complex in Sandanski in the south of Bulgaria. Ostensibly, our man is there to record some new material and play a few gigs. Nice work if you can get it! The hotel proprietor is more than happy for our clarinetist to continue with his weekly Sunday Service live streams, so, here we are again, one o'clock Sunday, this week direct from a Bulgarian holiday resort.

Adrian's favourite clarinetist is Edmond Hall, so much so our 'vacationing' live streamer recently completed a tour of some two and a half years promoting his Profoundly Blue album. The tour set list formed the basis of today's Sunday Service. Dardanella, perhaps Hall's signature tune, began the one hour set. Our Sunday preacher has mastered the art of multitasking: playing, singing, reading on-screen comments and chatting to his 100+ online flock, all the while keeping an eye on the technical side of things.

Adrian recalled sitting-in as a thirteen year old at a regular session at the Marquis of Granby pub in Sompting, Sussex featuring a host of seasoned musicians. One of the first tunes he got to play with them was Tishomingo Blues. So, today he played and sang it. Edmond Hall recorded In a Shanty in Old Shanty Town on Adrian's birthday, albeit 39 years before he was born. Our man joked it was as if Hall had recorded it especially for him! Time for one more tune...You Made Me Love You (I Didn't Want to Do It). One online observer, none other than drummer Jack Cotterill, commented: The ability to swing like f*** on your own. Quite.
