Tonight (Friday) Front Row (Radio 4, 7:00pm*) marks the 50th anniversary of Bitches Brew. Miles Davis' career took many twists and turns - bop to cool, the Gil Evans' collaborations, the great 1960s' quintet recordings, In a Silent Way, then, fifty years ago, a gatefold, double LP titled Bitches Brew.
Mati Klarwein's striking cover art hinted at something different (Klarwein's work would be seen again on the cover of Live Evil) and on first play the sound was quite extraordinary. It has been said this was the point some jazz fans switched off, dismissing Davis' new direction. One thing is certain, Bitches Brew reached a new audience with, in jazz world terms, huge numbers of album sales. Tune to Radio 4 tonight, it'll be interesting to hear what the talking heads have to say.
* Note the earlier time of seven o'clock
