This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. RIP Manu Dibango

Following on from Mike Longo who died on March 21, Covid-19 has claimed another jazz musician, Paris based, Cameroonian saxophonist, Manu Dibango who succumbed to the deadly virus yesterday (March 24).

Best known for his 1972 hit Soul Makossa, later the subject of a lawsuit against Michael Jackson, Dibango was active up until recently being seen and heard on video in February this year.

Manu Dibango was 86.
Sadly missed.

Big Blow.
Soul Makossa was a massive worldwide hit, but Big Blow was a big jazz-funk record a few years later and, for me, is a better record. If people don't know it, it's worth youtubing, even if you don't normally expect to like jazz-funk, for the African elements.
I realised last night I have a double best of album that I've only ever played the two tracks from, so that'll be where I'm going next.
