This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Keeping it local with JRR


Today's edition of Jazz Record Requests had something of a regional flavour to it. Topping and tailing the programme were tracks featuring the Kenny Clarke-Francy Boland Big Band and Duke Heitger. The roaring Clarke-Boland outfit included in its ranks County Durham-born Derek Humble. The alto saxophonist had recently joined the band at the time the early sixties' album Jazz is Universal was recorded. The requested track - Box 703 (Washington D.C.) could best be described as a 'cooker'!

To sign-off, programme presenter Alyn Shipton played Skylark performed at the 2017 edition of Mike Durham's Classic Jazz Party by an international line-up led by American trumpeter Duke Heitger. The concert was recorded at the Village Hotel, North Tyneside and released on CD with the apt title Pleasure Mad.
