This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Zoë Gilby Quartet @ The Lit & Phil - Dec 7

A cold but dry Friday afternoon with Christmas just around the corner didn't deter the Lit and Phil's regulars from turning out for their monthly lunchtime jazz fix. 

An unforgiving parking meter (time up at one minute past two for one of the musicians) necessitated a prompt one o'clock start. From Take Five to Caravan, vocalist Gilby presented an entertaining hour of standards, left field popular numbers and a swinging take on Monk's Think of One.  

A seasonal reference or two - April Mist (comp. Tom Harrell) and Autumn Serenade (comp. Peter de Rose/lyrics Sammy Gallop) either side of Rodgers and Hart's I Didn't Know What Time it Was shaped a varied set list with guitarist Mark Williams in restrained mode as was fellow virtuoso, bassist Andy Champion. Gilby's recall of a lyric as impressive as ever (song sheets nowhere to be seen) and assured stage presence (as good as any vocalist on the scene) held the audience rapt for the one hour set. As the parking meter ticked on - time waits for no one - Joni Mitchell's Mingus-inspired Dry Cleaner from Des Moines lit-up a midwinter day. A slinky after-the-watershed Some Cats Know escaped the tut-tut censor and it was left to Russ Morgan's superb brushwork to usher in the set closer - Juan Tizol's Caravan.

Loved the gig! Set-list full of surprises (as ever): Joni Mitchell and Charles Mingus? Who knew? Not this jazznoramus,for sure! Last time out I raved about Red Right Hand - this time we got Peter Gabriel's Mother of Violence: more enigmatic lyrics and dramatic delivery. Thanks, Zoe (and the band)!
