Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Tonight on BBC4

If you're staying in tonight then BBC4 is the place to be.
They're showing the final of the 2018 BBC Young Jazz Musician of the Year competition that was held at the South Bank Centre as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival.

The five finalists for this year's award were Xhosa Cole (saxophone), Reuben Goldmark (piano), Fergus McCreadie (piano), James Owston (bass) and Seth Tackaberry (bass).
May the best musician win.
The programme goes out at 21:00 hours.
-----
Earlier, at 20:00 hours, Soweto Kinch takes us on his own journey through jazz in London, New Orleans and New York.
The programme is repeated at 02:30 hours.
Lance.

A deserving winner in Xhosa Cole (saxophone), I thought. Good to see Seth Tackaberry on stage again - he was in Hexham, not long ago ( https://lance-bebopspokenhere.blogspot.com/2018/09/harry-greene-quartet-hexham-abbey.html )!

Agreed on both counts. Also, Fergus McCreadie gave an impressive performance at the Globe last year. All five contestants were deserving of their place in the final and we will watch out for their future development.
Also pleased that the winner didn't opt for all originals.
