Bebop Spoken There

Stan Woodward: ''We're part of the British jazz scene, but we don't play London jazz. We play Newcastle jazz. The Knats album represents many things, but most importantly that Newcastle isn't overlooked". (DownBeat, April 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Joe Garner

The death was announced in the Evening Chronicle of a Joe Garner who passed away on December 17. Can anyone confirm/or otherwise as to whether this was the same Joe Garner who played bass with the Panama Jazzmen in the 1950s?
The age, 85, and the address in the Howdon area of North Tyneside point towards it being one and the same.
Information would be appreciated.

Hi Lance I visited Joe some time and this location sound correct: Very near to the Tyne tunnel At that time he was working on the OIL RIGGS in the North sea.
Also saw him at the Cresent Club about 6 to 12 months ago
Hope this has been some help

Happy New Year Raymond Newton Double Bass/ cello and cello player

Thanks Ray - it must have been some time ago if he was working on the rigs!

Hello Lance, my name is Lance, Joe’s son. Dad always told me I was named after a jazz musician as he really liked the name. Sorry if I’m stating the obvious, are you that man?

Hello Lance, I'd like to think I was the inspiration for your name but, as I actually never met your dad, I'm probably not. However, I learne of the high respect he was held in when I worked alongside Ronnie McLean and played in a band with Ray Jobling who, I believe, took over from Joe with the Panama Jazzmen. The jazz world is such a tight community that, even if we don't know someone personally, we know of them.
I'd love to know of some of the bands he played in after the Panama and if you had a photo we could post.
Deepest sympathy
Lance [Liddle]
PS: The only other Lance I can think of is Lance Cousins who was around in the same era.

Lance, thanks for the reply, Lance Cousins sounds familiar.
Dad spoke of the Panama Jazz Men and he said at one point was with Geraldo.
He also was on the "Chusan" and "Saxonia" cruise ships.
Also the "69 Club" in Newcastle.
He mentioned being in the 69 Club when the Krays visited one night.
In later years worked "Grey's Nightclub" and the "Westerhope Social Club" with the Johnny Sampson Combo (I think).
The hours got to him - 7ish till 10ish at Westerhope followed by an 11ish till 2ish at Grey's. So he went back on the tools.
Thank you for the condolences.
Regards Lance.
