With a band name like Flying Machines any review has to contain the obvious lines ‘they go up tiddly up up, they go down tiddly down down’ and these frightfully keen young men certainly did loop the loop and thoroughly entertain a packed house at The Jazz Cafe on Tuesday night.
The band largely showcased their eponymous album led by band leader and composer guitarist Alex Munk. The tunes are all highly melodious and accessible with a definite prog rock feel to them. Munk takes most of the solos but the other band members all contributed considerably and there were great patches in the ensemble playing which hit the spot. Keyboard player Matt Robinson played some really groovy stuff and I particularly enjoyed drummer Dave Hamblett brush work. Although regular bass player Conor Chaplin was elsewhere, deputy Rob Mullarkey was a more than worthy replacement. The band seemed to get louder and rockier as the evening progressed and a good time was clearly had by all. Oh those magnificent .......

The live gig sounded more jazzy while the cd was a bit like listening to rock.
