Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Josh Sinton Trio + Improvisers Work Shop Ensemble @ The Bridge November 13

Josh Sinton (baritone sax); Han-earl Park (guitar); Dominic Lash (bass)
(Review by Steve H/Photos courtesy of Ken Drew).
Sunday night at The Bridge saw the first visit to Tyneside of  Brooklynite Josh Sinton and Korean Han-earl Park. Completing an international trio of great aplomb was British born bass player Dom Lash. This was an esoteric offering of deep, dark and moody free jazz. Sinton plays mostly in the lower registers but conjures up a vast array of sounds taking the listener on a fascinating musical journey. Park augmented the proceedings with fascinating minimalist scratchy guitar sounds whilst Lash was a revelation on the double bass. The trio played one long piece which was greeted with warm and enthusiastic applause by the most respectably sized audience. Josh Sinton a musical anglophile thanked the audience with great humility saying how they had contributed to the success of the evening. A short encore then ensued rewarding everyone for their attendance.

Earlier in the evening saw the inaugural performance of Improvisers Work Shop Ensemble this is a group that meets monthly on Sundays at The Bridge. There was a variety of well-known local musicians on stage joined by several members who I did not recognise. Anyhow a thoroughly (dare I say surprisingly) entertaining set was delivered. I recommend any budding improviser to give it a go one Sunday afternoon after all, it’s the taking part, not the winning that counts.
