Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Pilgrim Street Set @ Hoochie Coochie. July 9

Richard Burns (trumpet), Gary Turner (tenor saxophone), Mark Williams (guitar), Paul Susans (bass) & Rob Walker (drums)
(Review by Russell/Photo from a previous gig.)
Cocktails, continental beers, Gregory Porter on screen, the Pilgrim Street Set were ready to go. Guitarist Mark Williams in for the absent Paul Edis, the hottest funkin’ band in the known universe tore it up. The second Thursday in the month residents play for fun, play for the Hoochie Coochie regulars, everyone has a good time.
Wayne Shorter, Peter Erskine, Eddie Harris and a few originals. Pulsating jazz funk, Paul Susans and Rob Walker the band’s bass and drums fulcrum, Burns and Turner the power-house front line. The depping Mark Williams went into overdrive from the off – towering solos, matched by the massive sound of Gary Turner’s tenor. Richard Burns towered over everyone (the trumpeter is a six foot plus Aussie!) and he too scaled new heights – strong solos time and again.
Freedom Jazz Dance and a Susans’ original were but two of many highlights. As a tribute to the late Ornette Coleman the band played Ramblin’. This wasn’t an act of opportunism by the Pilgrim Street Set, the tune has been in the pad from day one. Gary Turner’s tunes are always worth hearing; on this gig he dug out Armadillo and Conkers – or was it titled Conquers? Conquers would, perhaps, be apposite as he (Turner) and the band beat off all challengers!
Next month, Thursday 13th, eight o’clock. Free admission.
Russell.
