RIP Bob Whitlock

Bassist Bob Whitlock died on June 29 age 84.
A founder member of the original Gerry Mulligan Quartet along with Chet Baker and Chico Hamilton Whitlock held a pivotal role in the pianoless quartet. The most revolutionary concept of it's time - 1952 - the quartet was responsible for introducing many people to modern jazz, myself included, and the original 8 sides; Walkin' Shoes, Bernie's Tune, Nights at the Turntable and the rest have long become jazz standards, their success being due in no small measure to Whitlock's role as the group's harmonic foundation.
