Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Not the 9 o'clock News - Barking Mad Baker, Archie Shepp & the Devil’s Horn

(Preview by Russell)
Imagine…a jazz drummer, a jazz bassist and a blues guitarist get together, stay together for a short time, defining the blues-rock genre along the way. Cream sold albums by the diary load, called it a day and the drummer bought himself a polo team. Tuesday night’s Imagine…Beware of Mr Baker (BBC 1, 10:35pm) bravely ventures forth into the world of Ginger Baker.
Earlier on Tuesday, Composer of the Week looks at the work of Sally Beamish. Tune to Radio 3 at noon to hear the composer (a living composer!) talk about her interest in jazz. Ms Beamish is very much alive and well. Some time ago in King’s Hall, Newcastle University, Beamish was present to hear the British premiere of one of her works. And half an hour earlier (11:30am) over on Radio 4 Archie Shepp speaks of weighty matters pre and post-Charlie Hebdo.
Heavy stuff on Tuesday, there is much good jazz to be heard a few days earlier. Archive on 4: The Devil’s Horn (Saturday, Radio 4 Extra) is a repeat of a 2013 broadcast looking at the history of the saxophone. Presented by Soweto Kinch, Courtney Pine contributes. The hour-long programme begins at three o’clock.
Bobby Wellins, a positively nice chap, can be heard in concert on Jazz Line-Up (Radio 3, Saturday, 6:00pm). Clare Teal talks to Wigan Jazz Festival director Ian Darrington (nine o’clock, Sunday, Radio 2). Our big band man Tony Eales will be at the Wigan event and we can expect dispatches in due course. Stay tuned.
Russell.
