"Easy listening" king, James Last, died on Tuesday (June 9). Perhaps the must successful big band leader of all time selling millions of albums. Although I wouldn't claim to be a fan I appreciated his marketability and, when he played Newcastle City Hall, which he did regularly his musicians would invariably drop by the Central Arcade emporium where I worked and were always good fun and, naturally, top notch musicians. Many were also excellent jazzmen as I discovered when they were trying out instruments in the store.
James Last was 86 and will be remembered and missed by many.Obituary.
Lance.
